PRIVACY
Your study stays on your device.
Obsidian Black Ltd operates CycleBench. The tool records your studies, scans, interruption reasons and review notes in your browser, and creates its downloads there. There is no account, and nothing you record is uploaded.
What the browser keeps
A study starts as temporary work in the tab's memory. It is not written to browser storage, cookies or the address bar, and closing or refreshing the page can lose it. With Save on this device, the project is stored in this browser's site storage until you delete it under Open saved work or clear the site data. Anyone using the same browser profile can open it. A saved study that was running reopens with its unfinished interval marked uncertain; the timer is never resumed. Preparing for offline use stores the tool's own files, not your studies.
Station codes, activities, phase names, reasons, notes and timings never appear in page addresses, tab titles or file names. Downloads use fixed names, such as cyclebench-observations.csv.
Files and the camera
The observations CSV, PDF reports and project backup are created in your browser and saved where you choose. A backup you import is read and checked on this device and opens as a new temporary project; it never replaces a saved original. The camera opens only when you press the camera button in a scan field and allow access. Barcodes are decoded on this device, the camera stops once a code is read or the view is closed, and no image is stored or uploaded. On browsers without a built-in barcode reader, the decoder is downloaded from this site the first time the camera opens, unless the tool is already prepared for offline use.
Network requests and links
Loading the site retrieves its own pages, scripts, styles and fonts. Hosting providers may record ordinary request details such as IP addresses and paths. Once loaded, timing, saving and downloads need no further requests, and the tool's security policy allows connections only to this site and to Google Analytics, which loads only after you accept. CycleBench has no automatic error reporting. Links to other SmartFACT products open only when you select them and carry no tracking marker. No study value is ever placed in a link.
Feedback and support
The tool has no built-in feedback or problem report, so nothing about your work is sent unless you choose to send it. Our feedback form takes suggestions, and leaving your email address there is optional. To report a defect, use the SmartFACT support form. Use synthetic examples where you can, rather than real station codes, notes or timings.
Optional analytics
With your consent, we use Google Analytics to understand visits to our pages and the tool. The Google tag stays off until you accept. Rejecting analytics does not affect the tool.
Google receives page views, browser and device details, connection information and cookie identifiers. Our events use fixed names and values only. In the tool, a page view records the fixed page name CycleBench free tool and the tool's address, with no query string, fragment or referrer. On these pages, referrers are reduced to their origins. Events never include codes, station or activity names, reasons, timings, notes, file contents or file names. When you follow a link to another SmartFACT product or service, one event records only this tool's name, the destination product and a fixed name for where the link appeared: suite_cta_click on these pages and suite_next_step in the tool. Advertising personalisation is disabled. Offline use and downloaded files never send analytics.
Your analytics choice is remembered for 180 days in a preference cookie shared across smartfact.ai and its subdomains, including product websites and apps. Use Analytics settings on these pages, or Change preference in the tool, to accept or reject analytics across the suite. Google Analytics cookies remain specific to each host and last up to 180 days. Open pages check for changes; other sites remove their analytics cookies when next opened or resumed. Saving studies on this device and your analytics choice are separate controls.
Google processes analytics data under its own arrangements, which may involve processing outside the UK. Contact [email protected] about your information or to exercise your data rights. You can also raise a concern with the UK Information Commissioner at https://ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint/.
